soooo i’m new to nix and nixos and i want to switch from gnome to hyprland. however there is a reallly steep learning curve for both and in the meantime i am looking for a working out of the box flake or configuration repo that i can just add to my configs as a starter to get hyprland up and running. is that a thing? thanks!
edit: thanks everyone for enlightening me about hyprland’s bad origins, let’s reframe it to - any hyprland alternative that aren’t Nazi adjacent?
If you want something similar to hyprland, but easier syntax similar to the old hyprlang before they switched to lua, you can try MangoWC. Has pretty much all the eye candy and features too
I’m using Niri+Noctalia to my satisfacion, but I’m coming from Sway so the system feels familiar. I am not aware of any scandals, but I haven’t gone and checked, so…
I should switch from Hyprland to Niri, methinks. Does Niri break with literally every update? Because I’m soooo sick of fixing Hyprland every damned time.
Uh, no. Noctalia had a major version bump with a config change, but that was more or less it…
Just switched to Niri from Sway. It’s the best WM I’ve used so far, and coming from Gnome it’s probably more familiar since it’s got dynamic workspaces.
Hyprland is not the right choice. If you’re not aware, it’s a fascist aligned project. It’s your call if that’s an issue for you personally or not, but people will probably not be able to assist with it much.
ah shit another one? ugh
Just scroll any unixporn forum. But, to make it truly yours, you should build it yourself from parts you find on there, not take an entire configuration. NixOS makes that easy. You can also run both Hyprland and GNOME, and switch in the display manager before logging in. But are you sure Hyprland is the best? If you do not really want the graphical effects (which I don’t really see you doing), Niri is another good compositor that’s not funded by Nazis (DHH/Omacom pays Vaxry’s salary), is built from the ground up in Rust, instead of wlroots and C++, and has infinite sideways scrolling (a feature that might seem niche, but is actually quite fun).
will take a look at niri, thanks! finding out that another big project is Nazi is such a downer, oof
