Not that I am anticipating a better government to form, but I was quite satisfied to read this when I got home last night. Been living in NL for 11ish years and Rutte has been in power THE ENTIRE TIME. Let’s talk about soft dictatorships masquerading as “democracy” shall we?!

What is NL? I really don’t understand what’s happening here so if you could explain it to me I’d be grateful.

The Netherlands, their (conservative) government has collapsed, apparently after having been in power for over a decade.

There have been 4 successive government coalitions headed by the vvd party with Mark Rutte as prime minister. The coalition members would usually be status quo “centrists”, Christian “centrists” and one time the pvv (the anti-Islam party).

Despite multiple scandals such as gas extraction causing earthquakes in Groningen with little help towards the inhabitants or the “toeslagen” scandal when thousands of families were financially ruined by the ministry of finance(?) Because of bureaucratic errors(?).

Now they face competition from the BBB (farmer citizen movement) which did very well in the local elections. Unfortunately while their success may represent a large non confidence vote from the population their main backing subsists of large agricultural firms and their campaign was filled with extremely questionable rethoric.

(I mostly wrote this from memory some details will probably be different)
