  • You are probably referring to Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou. There are a lot of SOL anime so I got to choose something. Personally I think it is pretty good but not as good as some other anime that I would recommend over it. As well as the fact that Bocchi the Rock has a mostly female cast so I unconsciously selected anime that are similar in that regard. If OP wants to try something with a large male cast this is the only anime I can think of that would be fitting so it’s good that you mention it.

  • What is similar? Does it need to be a band anime? Does it require social anxiety characters? Just cute girls doing cute things (CGDCT) in general? Have yuri elements?

    • slice of life (SOL) with characters playing in a band: K-ON! (band aspect is secondary)
    • SOL with anxious main character: Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu
    • general SOL/CGDCT classics: Lucky Star, Nichijou, Azumanga Daioh
    • more modern SOL/CGDCT: Kiniro Mosaic, Gochuumon wa Usagi desuka?
    • SOL with yuri: Hidamari Sketch (moderate, also a classic), Yuyushiki (lots)

edit: I personally don’t think that Bocchi the Rock! is super laid back, but if you compare it to action shows it obviously is. If you really want to go the laid back route you can look into the genre Iyashikei (“healing type”) with anime such as Non Non Biyori, Yuru Camp (still have to watch this one so can’t verify personally but is very popular) and Yokohama Kaidaishi Kikou (absolute classic).

  • Those little sections are mostly stand-alone pieces to be enjoyed just by themselves. Some of the scenes show small events that happen in the world of the main story, e.g. the cat walking on the street and after that Nano running past. Then later on we see Sasahara go home with Koujiro on the same streets. This is a bit of story telling and world building. Other sections like the rope skipping ones, are just little skits that use characters from the main story. Others like Helvetica Standard are completely disjoint from the main story. Later on you will see little skits and moments with characters never seen before and never to be seen again. Nichijou is a slice of life of which its title reveals it is a slice of life. A big theme is the appreciation of small moments otherwise unnoticed as we go through life. Sometimes that is just what it comes down to I think. Such as the peacefulness of a calm street or the beauty of the countryside. Nichijou also has some advanced language jokes where to western audiences the skit is nonsensical but to the Japanese audience an actual joke is presented. Other times it has a Koan type of vibe, where it is not meant to be understood logically. I really love all these little in between sections. They are unique and add so much extra depth and content to the show. I guess this is turning into just another ramble why Nichijou is so great so I’ll end it here lol.
