I’m a software engineer that works for a company in London. My salary is lower comparatively to many of those a level lower in the US.

I’m looking to move to California soon, where my salary will effectively double, arguably more so since I’ll be taking more home.

I can afford a home an hour from work in London. In CA I seemingly can’t afford shit, and rent nearby will absolutely wipe me out. It’s insane how one can earn the kind of money people can retire on in Europe and barely live a middle-class life. I’m in an extremely privileged position, and given my position I have no idea how others manage to do shit like have families.

  • In the UK I’ve found the extremes to be on both sides, although this largely aligns with the punk movement here from decades ago.

Some metal fans are the nicest people you could hope to meet. One guy I met in a bar a month or so ago got talking to me because I noticed his Hatebreed shirt, and we got to talking about music, our kids, and life in general. I remember talking about tummy time with him, and before I left he had called his wife to ask what his daughter really liked, and rushed to give me the link so that I could buy it.

Some are also utter bells. One guy I met years ago gave me shit for liking The Used’s set at Taste Of Chaos years ago, despite it basically being an emo festival that he also attended. He apparently only went for Killswitch Engage…so spent a fuck-ton to see one band while he seethed about the rest. I met another guy in a bar a year or so ago that was a huge dick to some women because one of them wore a Sleep Token shirt. He kept asking them to say what their favourite songs were, gave them shit because they were the newer songs, and then went on a rant about how they’re not even a metal band because they “basically do pop now”.

Oh man, the lack of a headphone jack is still a killer for me. It’s one of the reasons why I stayed on OnePlus 6 for so long, and to be blunt, I don’t see the Pixel 8 as a huge jump outside of power and bullshit like AI photos. My kingdom for a high-end phone with a headphone jack and stock-ish Android!

  • It’s a real shame that OnePlus just became an Oppo rebranding, because the OP1 was a phenomenal phone, and up until OP6 they were both cheap and had a relatively clean Android install. To date, features like gestures are still better than what you get on the Pixel, and most of their stuff is less invasive than Google’s.

The Android market nowadays, especially for high end, is “which manufacturer is the least shit”, and that’s a real shame.

It’s attitudes like this that made me choose C# as the language I wanted to use professionally after graduation.

Having grown up in the Slashdot era where people would be childish, post about Micro$oft, and parrot EEE, all while the .NET Foundation consistently put out great tooling with a mature community that actively wanted to help you learn the language/framework, the choice was simple.

  • I mentioned this the last time there was a “hur dur stealing is fine” thread, but I once watched two guys steal hundreds of pounds (currency, not weight) of meat from a supermarket. They obviously did this to sell it on, but many of the comments here were saying not to side with shareholders or that the store could handle the losses no problem.

Tell someone that is actually struggling about shoplifting, and many of them will say there are two minds to this: you’re either desperate or stupid. It’s clear as day when someone is desperate (i.e. stealing formula - frankly if they got caught I’d pay for it for them and would happily give them all of my newborn stuff that I no longer use for free), but it’s also really fucking obvious when someone is doing it to be a cunt.

  • How about instead of anarchist cosplay where we all pretend that we’re going to petrol bomb billionaire estates, we push for people with excessive incomes to be taxed at a much higher threshold?

The fact that there are billionaires just shows that the system is hilariously flawed. Billionaires would rather you sit around and make memes about them than actually push for some fucking change…
