  • I’d love to see some actual discussion of the manga rather than endless posts about the psychic sisters. Just read a fan translation of Chapter 185.

    spoiler

It’s interesting to see a couple of S-class heroes actually trying to work with some surviving members of the Monster Association. I feel like Flashy Flash and Child Emperor never would have tried going to a monster for help prior to this arc. The strategy before now was simply “eradicate”. Between that, and what we see is happening to Darkshine’s confidence, it’s nice that some side characters are developing and showing signs of actual character growth.

  • For what it’s worth, I did not buy the wizard game and thought r/gamingcirclejerk was justified in calling on people not to support it, or a certain TERF associated with it. But I’m keen to let the subreddit drama fade away when the rest of Reddit does.

I also agree that the community is a baby, which makes the use of the term “Thunderdome” a bit ambitious. If a meme party thread is allowed, I’d probably have to call it “Slap Fight in a Food Court” instead.

  • Do you suffer from anxiety about climate change and its effects?

I moved to Maryland in 2010. In the 13 years I’ve been here, I have definitely noticed effects of climate change. Snow has become rare in the winter. There are more 100F days in the summer. And there are fewer insects, with the exception of carpenter bees, which you usually only saw on the Virginia side of the Potomac.

That’s just in my backyard. Elsewhere, Lake Mead and the Great Salt Lake are literally drying up. The jet stream that has a major impact on our weather might just disappear some day in the near future. Also, the entire country of Australia caught on fire a while back.

What gives me anxiety is how damned fast these changes happened. It wasn’t a shift that happened over the span of a generation, it’s only been a dozen years. I can’t help but wonder, how are things going to look in another 12-13 years at this rate?

Have you ever made significant individual lifestyle choices because of climate change?

Individual lifestyle changes aren’t going to be enough. 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global carbon emissions. And a significant chunk of those emissions come from oil companies. We need to be more aggressive in banning new sales of petroleum-burning vehicles and invest in other forms of zero-emission, mass transit. I take the Metro whenever I go into DC, but it doesn’t do much good when the Beltway is constantly packed with SUVs and trucks.

What do you think of proposed technologies like carbon capture? Do you think they’re useful, or a technocratic waste of time? Can they be viably used at large scale on any reasonable timeframe?

No idea if they’re viable, but I do know we’re running out of time, and any possible solution is worth exploring. Even if we do significantly cut global carbon emissions at this point, damage has already been done. I think that it will be necessary to develop technology to reverse that damage, one way or another.

  • I’m supposed to be managing a small team and from that perspective, it’s a mixed bag. Everyone I supervise has taken a firm stance that they want to be 100% remote, and I support them because I can see that work is getting done, and I want to retain the talent that we have. At the same time? I’ve never met any of these people in person, I don’t have a great sense of who they are and what motivates them, and a couple of them take 60-90 minutes to respond to an e-mail from me.

When I go into the office, every two weeks or so, I can have more meaningful interactions and I feel like I know the in-office team members better than I know the people I manage. If they don’t respond to my e-mail right away, I can turn my head and see if they’re busy, out to lunch, or just watching YouTube. I try to be pretty easygoing about it but the fact is, there are a lot of advantages to being in-office if you’re expected to give people performance reviews. I can only view so much when I’m in Washington and my team member is in Texas. And you always have some people who will take advantage of the flexibility that they’re entrusted with.

  • Sounds like we work in similar fields. I changed jobs recently but at the one I had last year, I occasionally needed to do classified work. My boss told me I’d have to come into the office to do that, and I lived more than 50 miles away. So, I talked to someone who actually knew what he was talking about instead, and determined that I could, in fact, use a SCIF much closer to home. Just saying, if you get a chance to get a second opinion, it might not hurt to ask.
