I’ve been seeing that site come up a lot in my searches lately.
Checked it out and it sure is. When I start my Fite Emblem play through I’ll know where to go now. It’s been common to say reddit killed message boards, but turns out it was really more an insulated view from redditors who got used to just depending on reddit. And there’s something about forums where even few posts that are old don’t make the place seem as dead, since responding just bumps it back up so the thread just gets reused instead of new thread dependence.
Saying you are going on a hunger strike but then announcing you’ll only go on it for two days made it a long shot that other subs would push for longer.
Any idea how only a 48 hour black out even got started instead of longer? Who proposed only 48 hours to make it catch on as that short of a protest.
So does that means if a member of a defeded instance searches out a community with ![community]@[bannedinstance] it will show up in community/all when they search for it, but members of that instance just won’t be able to comment or vote?
Even then I do think an RSS would be nice to have in the event an instance disappears and then having to search out which communities you were active in again.
On reddit it had made it easier resub to subreddits you had been subscribed to when you were deleting accounts and moving to a new one through use of multrisubreddit links.
Edit: Tested it out and looks like is options to set which posts to make comments visible or not? So users from banned instances could see posts but potentially not comments? Actually it seems like once the defed happens only old content remains, so even if you are subscribed you no longer see anything new. I guess this promotes push to instances that are on good terms as many as possible? Like lemmy.ml for those who want to have an uninterrupted subscription feed?
What happens if the instance also defeds beehaw.org?
That’s the type thing that has me wishing there was a reliable way to get a single feed to view the communities I want without worry about the decisions of each instance against the other. Especially with the decisions being an impact on the entire instance as opposed to a whitelist of certain communities.
Yep, there was a reason long time redditors used RES for the browser and third party apps to attempt to better curate content.
/r/all I noticed over the years would have so many subs focusing on highlighting the worst aspects of humanity that you’d be left thinking everyone out there wants to start a fight with you, rob you, or murder you. Reddit had no problems removing nsfw stuff but was happy to let videos with violence be present.
It was interesting seeing so many different variations of amiamasshole type subs keep popping up too. People naturally gravitate towards rage since it does invoke deep emotional responses.
Should the space get bigger and bigger inevitably it will become the way it is on reddit.
What I found most helpful was finding smaller subreddits and sticking to those and blocking keywords and subreddits I found too big and mentally draining from appearing when I went to /r/all. Like way too many popular subs focused on promoting topics that would antagonize people.
So my reddit experience has been positive. But, it was due to great third party tools, so I think the key is going to be more feature rich curation tools whether it’s official lemmy ones integrated into the site or extensions/apps.
I don’t think believing that the community will stay the same should numbers increase is something that can be relied on with how it only takes a small percentage of the userbase to start skewing content as the population grows and grows. Tools I think is the way forward, and why third party apps were invaluable for some for being able to be in a good headspace while browsing reddit instead of being exposed to unfiltered reddit.
People wishing to land into a large sum of money that would free them from the obligation to have to work to survive is enough proof that lot of people don’t really grow up wanting to do mundane 9-5 tasks. Its just that for some, those childhood dreams never managed to actually become feasible reality and now they got to do what they have to in order to survive.
It’s the helpful communities that I would really miss. Like /r/skyrimmods as an example with wonderfully done community guides. Those type of resources would be a shame to lose, since even if you aren’t interested in socializing they are an amazing resource.
And I had done a lot of searches including reddit as a keyword, since there’d often times be a helpful comment regarding what I had a question about.
3rd party filter options and Reddit enhancement is incredibly useful and what made it so preferable over all the social media options with the power it gave to curate instead of having to rely on an algorithm.
I hope lemmy gets those type of third party apps and tools to make it possible.
I love those type of places. And the wikis people create have been so helpful when trying to start a new hobby.
If the userbase gets bigger a dedicated Tech Support would be nice to see so tech help posts don’t get lost in the shuffle.
I’m using Firefox on Android too. It really helps that the site is actually optimized for mobile compared to reddit.
Not using it is an option for something like social media. If this place turned out to be for instance a stormfront run one then it’d definitely be an easy pass without hesitation. At this point I’m new to this type of service so seeing how disconnected and independent from the problem players each instance is.
I think it is a huge culture shock for redditors who are used to the idea of extremists being the alt right, and the ones that they are used to mainly associating with hate speech and being in agreement they are an unsavory group.
Particularly with a lot of redditors who joined lemmy just looking for a reddit alternative for their hobbies. Usually in reddit when you hear someone say they don’t want politics the image that comes to mind is some alt right fascist who get hung up on how other people live their personal life and complain about not being able to use hate speech.
So encountering supposed liberals who are very reminiscent of the alt right is incredibly jarring. It’s leading to some going wait…what?..
Yep, it’s kind of like finding out something you use is made by antivaxers, flat earthers, holocaust deniers. Broad political ideology such as supporting communism isn’t an issue at all, but finding out some of them hold what feels very reminiscent of alt right extremists is eyebrow raising.
You weren’t kidding I scrolled down on the comments regarding anxiety and backed away. What is going on with that place. Who exactly is the demographic that uses it to comment.
