  • So does that means if a member of a defeded instance searches out a community with ![community]@[bannedinstance] it will show up in community/all when they search for it, but members of that instance just won’t be able to comment or vote?

Even then I do think an RSS would be nice to have in the event an instance disappears and then having to search out which communities you were active in again.

On reddit it had made it easier resub to subreddits you had been subscribed to when you were deleting accounts and moving to a new one through use of multrisubreddit links.

Edit: Tested it out and looks like is options to set which posts to make comments visible or not? So users from banned instances could see posts but potentially not comments? Actually it seems like once the defed happens only old content remains, so even if you are subscribed you no longer see anything new. I guess this promotes push to instances that are on good terms as many as possible? Like lemmy.ml for those who want to have an uninterrupted subscription feed?

  • Should the space get bigger and bigger inevitably it will become the way it is on reddit.

What I found most helpful was finding smaller subreddits and sticking to those and blocking keywords and subreddits I found too big and mentally draining from appearing when I went to /r/all. Like way too many popular subs focused on promoting topics that would antagonize people.

So my reddit experience has been positive. But, it was due to great third party tools, so I think the key is going to be more feature rich curation tools whether it’s official lemmy ones integrated into the site or extensions/apps.

I don’t think believing that the community will stay the same should numbers increase is something that can be relied on with how it only takes a small percentage of the userbase to start skewing content as the population grows and grows. Tools I think is the way forward, and why third party apps were invaluable for some for being able to be in a good headspace while browsing reddit instead of being exposed to unfiltered reddit.

  • It’s the helpful communities that I would really miss. Like /r/skyrimmods as an example with wonderfully done community guides. Those type of resources would be a shame to lose, since even if you aren’t interested in socializing they are an amazing resource.

And I had done a lot of searches including reddit as a keyword, since there’d often times be a helpful comment regarding what I had a question about.

  • I think it is a huge culture shock for redditors who are used to the idea of extremists being the alt right, and the ones that they are used to mainly associating with hate speech and being in agreement they are an unsavory group.

Particularly with a lot of redditors who joined lemmy just looking for a reddit alternative for their hobbies. Usually in reddit when you hear someone say they don’t want politics the image that comes to mind is some alt right fascist who get hung up on how other people live their personal life and complain about not being able to use hate speech.

So encountering supposed liberals who are very reminiscent of the alt right is incredibly jarring. It’s leading to some going wait…what?..
