If the bad things are going to happen, there’s little we can do to stop it, once it has been set into motion (no one person led to climate change). What we can do is control our response. We can do our best to mitigate what risks we can, and ultimately we can do our best to make the most of the situation we are in. That’s the one thing we can do as individuals to make things better for our future selves and our descendants, we can be compassionate to those around us and work to inspire our communities to do that too.

All in all, nothing tonight that you can think up will change the climate or the world’s response to it. We can worry about the future, but we only will know what the future holds as it occurs, so it doesn’t do much good to assume that the worst is necessarily going to happen. Catastrophizing sucks, and I know what you’re struggling with right now. Perhaps a counselor/therapist could help you understand and manage your anxious thoughts. You’re definitely not the first or only one to have these fears, so don’t feel bad about it. I hope some of the comments put you at ease and help you get some rest.

I’ve been looking at UMC, presbyterian, and UCOC since some are LGBT affirming and that’s really the big thing I look for (or at least a clear statement that they aren’t discriminatory about gay/bi and trans people). I am trying to dip my toes in, but it’s very different from what I grew up in, with robes and organs and what not. It’s definitely a journey!

I’m a Christian. I’m in a weird state where i’m trying to figure out where my faith sits and trying to find a new congregation I am comfortable with, since there’s so much bad stuff coming from Christians nowadays.

I’m trying to grow mine out, which is hard because it looks a bit messy. I have trouble finding a barber who can help shape it (it’s curly, so you really gotta find a good one for a good result) without cutting it really short. Now the hard part is finding products and techniques to style it. I’m so used to typical men’s hair routine of like 3 in 1 shampoo, so I’ve had to do a lot of research because I actually need to put effort into how I wash, dry, and style it.

I hope so. I miss the old days of forums and stuff. the Pre/peri web 2.0 era was when I first started exploring the web and while i probably have rose-tinted glasses, I feel there was far more community in those days, when you knew who was in the audience when you posted something.

Videos/mealtimevideos was a big thing for me. They kept me entertained while I ate lunch, lol.

I miss when the internet had rabbitholes. Stumbleupon and personal web pages wasted so much of my time. It’s like the internet was changed by urban sprawl. Instead of having different communities, some busy, some slow, some with broad interests, others with niche, there is only one shade of grey for the entire web: clean, monetize, and lowest common denominator.

I heard a joke when I was younger. “The internet is 99% porn, if we got rid of it, the only site left would be bringbackporn.com”

I’ve heard the idea that one of the biggest issues of the web is the homogenization of user spaces. When I was a kid, I could get on Club Penguin, Webkinz, Disney and Nick’s websites for games. I think AOL even had a kid’s oriented network I might’ve used once or twice when dial was still around. When I got into my teen years, I started joining user forums and message boards where I knew that it was mainly adults, so I did my best to act mature (and failed, lol), and if I got called out for being too young and not fitting in, I either got ran off or banned. Now that I’m an adult, even in non-NSFW internet spaces, I don’t really want to interact with kids, but rules and culture are dictated by the need not to expose children to unsavory content because we just let them run around.

I’m sure it’s the responsible thing to do, because I saw stuff I never should have, browsing 4chan, adult content, and other really nasty stuff as a kid. I definitely don’t want kids to be subject to that, but damn I hate that the presumption that kids might see something be a strike against users when adults want to discuss mature topics.

I’m a medical student in the US and a refugee from reddit. I have a lot of different interests that vaguely align with what seems to be the topics of interest here. Things like politics, technology, ethics/philosophy, science(particularly as it relates to the life sciences and medicine).

I chose this instance of Lemmy specifically due to it’s fairly neutral stance to content and the general push for conscientious community interaction (and the generalized focus on a few different subjects, rather than left-wing politics being a central theme pushed me here rather than some other instances I looked at) .
