People have become so jaded from years and years of corporate monopolizing, they no longer remember what an internet run by real humans feels like.
I wonder if that’s the case, or if more people just use the internet now and more people are assholes… I hope the former, but I worry it’s the latter.

I grew up playing PlayStation 1 and windows 98 PC. So everything from that era. My favorite PS1 games were front mission 3 and test drive 6. PC games - Doom 2, knights and merchants, Caesar 3, command and conquer.
There are a lot more that I played but these probably have the most hours in.
Yeah I like that no matter what email provider I use my experience doesn’t depend on the amount of people on that instance. But with lemmy everyone still tries to engage in local conversations more I think. There’s some sort of “well this is my instance and I’m going to help it get bigger” mentality going on.
I’m actually doing something more PC/home entertainment related because that’s what I grew up with. I have a collection of laserdiscs and a windows 98 computer that can use dial up and actually get to an archived internet that was in 1999.
I have this big shed - 28’x16’ with a gambrel roof. So I’m going to add a floor separating the attic and the main floor. The way the roof slopes the attic is still going to give me 7’ of clearance so that’s where I’m going to make an arcade. I made a really nice collection of laserdiscs from local Craigslist/thrift store sales, also an old pentium 3 desktop with windows 98. My friend wrote a proxy to the Wayback machine such that is you go to say yahoo.com it shows you what it was in 1999. Any website is from 1999. And a lot of the old games are abandoned too and can be found on archive.org

Your text is almost exactly my thought process too. But unlike Reddit if you don’t like how a community is moderate you can go start the same community on a different instance and lead its moderation efforts the way you think is appropriate. Then the communities will follow natural survival prices where whichever community is liked more will attract most people from the other community

I actually liked silly shitposts/memes that reach the top of /r/funny and the like. The good ones were far and in between but there was just so many people posting that you’d see a good one per day

I think for a “happy” porn instance to exist, there needs to be something like at most 3-4 “new” posts per moderator per day. Maybe even less than that.
I’ve worked as a cyber forensic specialist and I needed to take a few months off after some cases. And I was being paid.
Porn is not talked about “mainstream” enough and as a result there are probably as many “good” sexual communities as there are “bad”. I have no idea really I don’t think anyone does but I think it’s fair to explore the 50/50 threat model. I think it’s worth adding “grey” area and making it a 34/33/33 split. Because there are some communities that have been trying to make an argument that they aren’t bad and some other communities think they are bad… So I think at best we can have federation islands of like-minded sexual communities only.
“bad” content creators know they are bad and are illegal. So if lemmy adds features to quickly trace and expose “bad” content creators to authorities this can help. But this where the challenge comes - on Reddit “good” content creators trusted the admins to not dox them. On lemmy you now have to trust the instance admins. More over the federated nature makes this even more challenging - if a “bad” instance comes out your only choice is to defederate and maybe send a email to the feds (and likely face some sort of audit as well). Because if the same tracking tools become available across instances then it’s going to be doxxing galore.
I should add that I’m sitting in a waiting room about to have a minor surgery I’m very nervous about and posting online is me currently trying to ignore my feelings so this post’s reasoning is likely incomplete
