We really fucked up when we didn’t hang all the slave owners and give their land to the slaves like was promised. And just let the Southern states basically recreate slavery. The whole leadership and political apparatus of the South should have been destroyed for good after the Civil War ended not the milquetoast bargain that we ended up with.

The Union should have occupied those states and reformed the education system, the moral code and made damn sure anyone glorifying the Confederacy was hung. That and making sure the laws were just and fairly enforced.

We still are dealing with the consequences of it to this day.

A lot of suburban sprawl in the USA doesn’t have good local coffee shops around and Starbucks is the best, or at least reasonably close, option available to get a fancy caffeine fix.

Plus they serve lots of things other than over roasted drip coffee.

I like some of their iced drinks and macchiatos. But I like sweet garbage with too many calories. So my palette isn’t exactly refined. However, that’s a lot of the reason is just lack of options and people genuinely like their sugary sweet drinks and will pay a premium for everybody’s favorite drug caffeine.

As a person who lives in the USA even I am shocked constantly at how fucked up things really are here.

There is no federal law guaranteeing maternity leave in the USA. We have a law that you have to provide … I want to say 12? … Weeks unpaid leave for new mothers but that’s pretty much it. They may be able to claim short term disability for some time they’re out of work which is half your income not all of it.

Some individual states may have protections in their laws but it’s certainly not the norm. It really comes down to the company you work for. I work for a nice company. They gave me 10 weeks paid leave for parental leave, which is even more rare here for any kind of paternity leave (I’m a dude).

It’s pretty sad honestly.
