i do not use adblock on content creation sites like youtube

its a small effort for what i assume is a small bit of support for the content im watching

im alright with the protection of specific works from copying, but patents can fuck off

‘ideas’ should not be protected unless there was a reasonable expectation of privacy or compensation

exclusive right to make something because you happened to be the first one to think of it shouldnt exist, other parties should have the option to directly compete with your product to encourage innovation

if i buy a laptop that clearly has the apply logo on it, sure, i should be able to reasonably expect that i am actually buying an apple laptop, with the quality expected of an apple laptop

if im buying a t-shirt with an apple logo on it, or stickers with the apple logo on them, or a phone case with an apple logo on it but that’s clearly from a different company there shouldn’t be any issue

conservatives tend to believe that people not hosting their bullshit is a free speech violation, and that disagreeing with their bullshit is even more of a free speech violation

thats what happens when you dont hold free speech as any sort of ideal, and just like it as a tool for your team to beat the other team with

theres lots of examples where something was illegalised and subsequently fell in popularity and usage massively

barely still drink, ive struggled with memory problems and depression for years and am terrified of developing some form of dementia

its hard to say how much of the issues i experience today is really because of modern tech

i got into gaming at a very young age, and i spent most of my time just by myself playing singleplayer stuff as opposed to going out with the other kids. im not sure whether that was really a result of getting into pc gaming though, as i wasnt all that social even before that and had trouble making friends

not getting a phone until high school added to the issue because the other kids would be talking about things i flat out didnt know about, leading to further isolation

nowadays i just dont really make friends in person, all of my friendships and the like are online and based on common interests in video games and such

i dont know whether spending too much time on devices is to blame for that, or whether spending too much time on devices allowed me to find friends and people i care about regardless of the trouble i have engaging with people in person

my saying fediverse instead of specifying lemmy and kbin wasnt to imply that those are all of the fediverse, i did so because federation tends to mean that an influx of users to any of the federated sites means an influx of users to nearly the whole network

fediverse is dealing with a large influx of users thats way bigger than anything theyve had to deal with so far

this coupled with the fact that you can join in on from any of the sites if you are banned from a specific instance means moderation has not been able to keep up

the devs of the various sites are working in improving their teams and tools to better deal with the moderation required, its likely a temporary issue

for now make as much use of the block button as possible, both for specific people and whole communities that seem to exist solely to be assholes

on top of that, beehaw has recently defederated with two of the biggest instances, lemmy.world and shitjustworks, meaning that moderation will probably be able to keep up more again
