Reminder: ButtFish is a thing
I’m boring and I shitpost and tech-post all over the place. Big fan of Ea-nāṣir.

Reminder: ButtFish is a thing
It’s just 42.zip
respect to our hard workers, tirelessly working the content mines, all for nothing but a handful of up votes
If this is the thing that ends up reviving SootHouse I’m for it. The others can go fuck themselves tho.
That’s gonna end up a shitshow and a half, no matter which side you’re on
They’re all in one big polycule
Cinny > Element on everything but the feature set.
It’s hard to beat Element in features given the special treatment it gets (by being developed by the same people that develop the spec) but look and feel wise you can absolutely improve on it.
but that’s planned for the next major release.
…for years at this point.
Don’t get me wrong, the fact that this is a brand new keyboard app and not a fork of the AOSP one with no significant changes (hi OpenBoard) does throw quite a large wrench into the works, but development is going so slowly even on a de-Google’d ROM I had to resort to switching back to Gboard with internet access cut off to have anything I write have any sort of resemblance to understandable language.
There once was a r/195 which I’m late to the party for but was apparently just a dumping ground of memes by a bunch of students who all lived in dorm room 195 (or something along those lines) so when it shut down people who wanted to keep something like that going decided to set up r/196
The only rule (technically there were a few more such as no NFT avatars, or that one specific person could post porn if censored correctly) was that you had to post something before you left if you opened the sub. So it became a weird meme dumping ground, and because the mods weren’t assholes it ended up being a pretty nice space for left leaning folk and gender minorities.
No clue why posts are just titled “rule”. I assume it started out as people simply not having a title in mind when posting, and then just kinda stuck.
Aren’t tabs also more accessible? As in, you can adjust how much spaces it should equal to depending on your own eyesight & preference.
And with everyone just using the tab key anyway (except me because the entire leftmost row of my keyboard is broken), what purpose does spaces have beyond being a weird implementation detail on some style guides someone decided to throw together?
Tablets do have a singular purpose, being drawing.
Of course, most tablets that aren’t specially built for it (or are from Apple) are terrible at it, but I definitely wouldn’t want to draw on a phone or with a mouse.
Because of the slow nature of content I ended up being subscribed to more communities than I would have back at Reddit. My feed is still 99% 196 just like in Reddit, but instead of needing to pop into r/all or r/popular every few hours, the New Comments sort ends up “sprinkling” interesting stuff from other communities into my feed.
uBlacklist exists but you have to manually block sites individually. Not many people have made premade block lists for it yet
There is a fair few out there, one main issue is that you can’t even get a list of nsfw communities without being logged in on the instances they’re created in.
IIRC the only instance that patches that check out and is remotely discoverable because of it is lemmynsfw. Whatever communities other instances have are basically hidden to all but the select few who know about them / have an account there and goes to look them up.
On my own end, I can get Lemmy 0.18 instances such as .ml to un-pend by unsubscribing and re-subscribing, but Lemmy 0.17 instances such as .world or beehaw always show up as pending (despite sending posts over)
I think it’s just the acknowledgements those instances are supposed to send to your instance being lost in transit. Everything seems to work fine otherwise
I’ve been away from Matrix for a while so idk about any new and interesting ones, but it’s generally the whole Linux-y FOSS types of the internet that tend to have reasonably active Matrix channels, compared to the general purpose audience of, say, Discord.
Element is the most featureful one. You’ll probably want to have it around even if you don’t use it every day. Cinny looks pretty close to Discord (and is overall cozier imo), and FluffyChat is more Telegram/WhatsApp-y and seems to be one of the better ones for phones.
The mCaptcha system Lemmy devs are/were working on integrating on the next version is based on this approach afaik.
It doesn’t use any crypto but it does do “wasteful” proof-of-work calculations of some kind.
So, how will you treat screen readers? Will they see that question? If you hide it from screen readers as well, what’s stopping bots from pretending to be screen readers when scraping your page? Hell, it’ll likely be easier on the bot devs to make them work that way and I assume there are already some out there that do.
So was 0.18.0. In fact I think the next few releases will all be like this.
(just cheekily testing to make sure federation didn’t break between updates)
