I hate autocorrect for constantly changing my “its” to “it’s”.

Fun with strings! Ukulele, knitting, physics!

There is always a relevant XKCD
As I recall, Beehaw defederated with them because we were getting swarms of bots and spam from their instance, not because of their communities.
“You have the freedom to speak, and I have the freedom to stop listening.”
Spending time on single-topic forums is groovy. Ukulele Underground has a fairly lively forum, I can wallow in all the ukulele minutiae I want to my heart’s content. A lot of the people on UU are far more hardcore than I am, so I keep feeding /c/ukulele on the .ml instance and wait for the more casual ukulele players to arrive… like a hunter laying out bait.
I think you would be an excellent addition to the !bicycles@lemmy.ca community. You write very well and have a lot of experience to share.
Beehaw.org/instances gives you the full list. Bear in mind Beehaw is a couple years old. Experience builds up.
The current defed of Lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works is temporary, due to mod tools being inadequate to handle the Reddit overload. The admins of the three instances are on good terms, no-one is pissed at anyone else, they are all struggling to bring everything up to speed.
Newbies are freaking out, and posting wild tales of apocalyptic woe…
No. It’s a pun on “Brexit” that is getting used a lot.
“Brexit” was a silly term being used when the UK was debating leaving the EU. Britain + Exit = Brexit
Yup. Too specialized and niche = sad and alone.
It’s like walking into a party and announcing “I will only be friends with left-handed dental hygienists who are over 5 foot 8 and like sushi!” vs “Hello, everyone!”
<glances sadly at the ukulele community on Lemmy.ml>
Say, do you have an interest in ukulele, perchance? Maybe? Even slight? Sigh…
Temporarily, until the Rexxit flood eases off and better moderation tools are developed.
No worries. Don’t pay too much attention to the apoplectic posts from people who’ve been in the Fediverse for a couple days and don’t understand how it works yet. Federating and defederating while wrinkles are worked out is just part of the whole shebang, and has been going on for years here.
You don’t have to like dogs.
You do have to make that clear to some people. Put together a response, have it ready. “Please call your dog. I don’t like dogs and don’t want it near me.” And call restaurants before you go and ask if they allow dogs. And ask your friends to put their dog in another room while you visit.
I guarantee you some folks will assume you are afraid of dogs, and will try to use their dog to cure your “fear.” You will have to be firm that you are not afraid of them, you don’t like them.
That is the nature of the Fediverse. That is the nature of decentralization. Decentralized systems aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.
Some people want to rebuild Reddit. The Fediverse isn’t Reddit and was never meant to be Reddit, and can’t be Reddit.
It’s pretty cool to have so many options. We can have one account that sees more instances, or several separate accounts that see all those instances, or create our own instance: population 1 that sees all.
I’ve noticed the same thing replying from Beehaw to other instances. It hangs and the little spinning thing spins and spins and spins… I’m trying to develop the habit of always checking the language selection before I post.
It’s temporary, so I’m not very fussed. It’s all just part of being in a Fediverse. I deliberately did not create an alt/back-up account, despite most people doing so. (Too likely to spend even more time online!) There are plenty of other community subscriptions to keep me busy even with the current defed.
Just about everything on mander.xyz is interesting. That’s a science and nature instance you could look into.
Reddit has 500,000,000 subscribers, and about 75,000 joined Lemmy.
I doubt they give a rat’s patootie about any of this.
(Numbers approximate based on posts I’ve been reading)
The last update I saw said the server cost is something like $55 per month and there is $600 or so in reserves. The updates are usually in Beehaw Support community
We were using “real” and “for real” in the 1970s in the US.
