I agree with you on all points, but I’d also like to add that there’s an argument the current system in sports discriminates towards women.

In many sports, there’s a top league for men and a top league for women. Since men on average perform better, the men league is almost always favored, meaning there’s more money from advertisement and sponsorships, providing more lucrative contracts for the players.

Even if a woman would be among the very best in a sport, she’ll never be able to actually play in the top league in the best teams with the most lucrative contracts, which I think is 100% sexist.

They still don’t want to allow same-sex marriages though, although individual priests are allowed to go against the guidelines.

It’s especially used in the discussion about whether abortion should be legal or not, where it refers to the fact that the fetus in a pregnant person is indeed part of that person, and they are allowed to do what they want with their own body (e.g. abortion).

The post mentions the opposite, “your body, our choice” which refers to the anti-abortion movement where people, often due to religious reasons, think they should have control over a pregnant person’s body, rather than the pregnant person themself.

I don’t quite agree with this. It seems like you’re focusing on the worst types in each scenario.

Competitive debates aren’t (in my opinion) debates at all. They’re rhetorical competitions where you need to know how to talk convincingly/manipulatively, but don’t necessarily need to know anything about debating.

Political debates come in all shapes and forms, but of course the ones that will be focused on and remembered are there worst examples that seem the most silly.

You’re kind of right about internet debates. Especially the “scoring system” can be very biased depending on the community, but if you ignore the scores there can still be valid points to be found in some debates. Of course, being the internet, there will also be overwhelming amounts of spam/trolls that can be hard to ignore.

Conversation is a broader term that includes debates. Debates are conversations, but not all conversations are debates. The issue with the word debate is that it sometimes gets misused (like competitive debate) which makes its meaning a bit unclear. Although all of this is just my opinion, so take it with a huge scoop of salt.
