  • Monday. Alarm goes off. Partner says to turn it off cause she set hers for later. She did not.

    Cue panic mode.

Partner looks at clock. It is 8:22. Son needs to be at school in 8 minutes. There is a class trip.

We made it. School is across the street.

Came home. Sat on couch and wasted time on internet. At 9:30 my phone pings. Says I have a meeting at 10. I think, “that’s a mistake…I work this afternoon”.

I check the online schedule. I have meetings all morning from 10 to 1PM.

Cue panic. Shower and eating. Dressed. Run out the door. Exhausted. Hot. No coffee.

Phone dies as I sit down for the first meeting.

Not an awesome start. But, kinda fun in a way.

  • I had an overprotective mother and not too many friends that would dare invite me out to do stupid stuff (because they were scared to death of my mother).

The only stupid stuff was once I was careless with a match and nearly burned the house down (pure luck on that one).

Another thing that happened was not my doing, but I should have seen it coming. There was this guy who lived somewhere between the school and my house. One day he asked for a drive home. I dropped him off and he invited me in for tea (no jokes). I had some time so I went in, be polite and all. Well that little fuck put Clonazepam in the tea and I conked out. I was out for only a few minutes. I guess the stupid part is I got back in my car and drove home. Didn’t talk to that fella again and he pulled the same stunt on one of his other friends.

  • There was a period in my life that lasted about 4 or 5 years when I refused to admit that I needed to decompress. I had multiple employers, spent 6 days a week leaving before the sun came up and coming home after dark. I was drinking upwards of 10 coffees per day plus loads of soft drinks. When I did get in I would watch series or movies late into the night. I gained weight and developed anxiety. I also began having migraines multiple times a week. Then I developed pericarditis. I lived like that for a long time. Just popping Xanax to get through the day.

Finally, I managed to see a neurologist who confirmed my migraines (unilateral acephalgic etc. etc.) and gave me a doctor’s note and strict instructions. The TL;DR of those instructions was: REST.

So, I gave in and admitted defeat. That was the first step.

Very quickly my stress levels dropped. It took a few months for the pericarditis to stop.

I stopped all caffeine and other stimulants. Stopped the Xanax. Energy levels exploded.

Step 2 was doing something with that energy. Something I hate with a deep passion: EXERCISE.

After almost 5 years of thinking my life would just be like that it only took 6 weeks for things to get back on track. I deflated and dropped from 108kg to 82kg.

You didn’t need to story, but everyone else here is right. Rest and moving your body helped. Mentally, I was even more creative. I was friendlier. I was even recommended to apply for a promotion.

If you need to decompress, I think sleep is the best. If the sandman ain’t visiting, then combine with movement and fresh air.

  • I went all in on grades and work. I have no memories from university. I was baked morning, noon, and night. Just study, work, eat, sleep, smoke, exam, etc. I wrote my final exams with mononucleosis. Said, “peace out” to my “friends” and moved to another country 4 months later. I only speak with one person I was at university with who I also went to high school with.

I check in on certain people. They don’t remember me. My professors still wish me “happy birthday” though.

Socialising cannot be ignored. Some of your courses, especially the intro courses and electives, can be given a lower priority sometimes if you need to disconnect from school stuff.

  • Hi. This is a very good question. I am a professor myself, and all of our students are now required to take a course with a name like “Learning to Learn”. You are not the only one worrying or thinking about this. Most of your cohorts and peers will be in the same boat as you.

20 years ago when I was a student, my first year at uni was a waste of money and time. By second year I had it figured out:

    • Take notes, by hand. It will hurt at first, but that will pass. Some schools copy the Cornell method
    • Do homework as soon as possible so the theory from class is still fresh.
    • Read notes out loud when you can, as if you are practising a speech.
    • Don’t cram or study until the last minute.
    • If you are very serious, be prepared to lose sleep (I had 38 hours of class and 4 jobs that added up to about 50 hours… I slept 3 hours a night) or get a new rhythm like going to bed very early and getting up before everyone else.
    • Use the library as a study place, or a café. Seeing others work helps you get in the mood.

My students have the same troubles I did, but with the added distraction of phones! Mute them, airplane mode, whatever. Study time and school come first if you actually care about grades. Weekends are the worst for distractions, but don’t feel bad for having fun.

  • Welllllll…

This drama spreads out over 2 years or so so I will try to give you something interesting to read.

Our former superintendent in our apartment complex was a piece of work. Her and her husband were always going at it. They also liked to pry and peak and know what’s happening in the building. They would root through the trash if someone put styrofoam in the wrong bin and then come yell at them. So, we complained to the people in charge via email.

You know what those cretins did?

They just forwarded the email to the superintendent so I don’t need to tell you what kind of hate my partner and I were getting. Some peace was made but then Mrs. Superintendent was diagnosed with the big C and was basically on medical leave (it’s France so she was covered and paid so no bankruptcy). Mr. Superintendent continued to do the duties and then, she passed away. That was over a year ago.

At that point we had nobody taking out the bins or keeping shit working or even calling when the lift was out of service. We called. We complained. Nothing was happening. They hired a service to take care of the garbage but stopped paying them in December 2022. They got a new service after about a month.

Still, we complained. Lights weren’t working. Doors were broken. Cars were getting robbed in the underground parking. The people in charge didn’t give a damn…until…

One day a homeless fellow decided to start sleeping in our garbage area. This was towards the end of winter. We decided not to say anything and let this guy have a few warmer nights before making any calls.

Finally, the day came. All I had to say was “someone is getting something for free”.

Now comes the funny part of the drama. Legally speaking, this person can only be asked to leave. The police can ask them to leave, we can ask, but that guy can come back at no legal risk.

First, they installed cameras. That obviously is no deterrent. Now they need to change all the codes. Except they posted the codes on all the doors. So now he has the codes again. The guy keeps coming back.

The agency in charge has grown wise, so they don’t answer when I call anymore. So we got the landlord hounding them. And we’ve lived in 3 apartments in this complex, so we called the old landlords too. Now those landlords got all the landlords together and did the math that they have been paying for a superintendent and an empty apartment for over a year and they are threatening to fire the agency. The landlords showed up the other day and guess who they met? The dude in the trash area Oscar the Grouch-ing it taking a shower using the water they pay for.

All this BS has caused the new cleaning agency to quit so the landlords are taking turns cleaning the hallways and making sure there are lights and stuff. And, the agency cannot find anyone to be the superintendent because word has spread that it is out of hand here.

And that’s it. Not really a lot of drama, but enough to keep you busy for 5 minutes.

    All about stakeholders…

Somewhere up (or down) the chain of command someone probably has the duty to monitor what’s happening, probably for copyright and patent reasons. At some point, someone with a big wallet will see something about the Fediverse on the evening news and start sending emails and people will look into it.

  • Everything was all set for a great day. It’s me and my partner’s anniversary, plus we were invited to a cocktail thing overlooking a tall ships festival to watch the fireworks tonight… Then I woke up with a wonder cold! Awesome. Babysitter cancelled. No fireworks. No cocktail. But I did play some video games and didn’t have to go to work which I guess is pretty nice.

  • Just to follow up here.

Mojeek can search multiple sites at the same time and create a filter bubble thing.

Most search engines use the site: operator so focus on one site. Mojeek Focus lets you create a set of sites to search. If you plug in a bunch of Lemmy instances you can sort of search across instances.

For example, I used the following to search across a few instances:

{"lemmy":"i=beehaw.org,lemmy.ml,lemmy.world,feddit.de,sh.itjust.works,sopuli.xyz"} (you can Restore that on the Focus dashboard to use the same filter, and add to it as well).

screenshot: Mojeek Focus searching for "Debian"

Not great, but it complements the available built-in search.
