  • The is no such thing as self made wealth and an insane majprity of it is already being very comfortable and just going full bore.

There’s basically one self-made billionaire I’m aware of. Wealth turned him into a right-wing asshole unfortunately, but the original creator of Minecraft, Notch, is the closest thing to a self-made billionaire I can think of. He originally built Minecraft on his own and it was already doing insanely well when other people got involved. He did not have a rich background.

Now where we can argue about the self-made part: 1) None of what he did would’ve been possible without prior work by others (same goes for ANYTHING to do with computers nowadays), 2) There’s no guarantee he could’ve sold the game for over 2 billion dollars without help from others.

If I had not moved several kilometers away from my favourite bar, I swear some of the baristas would be communicating with me in grunts by now.

There was a period where me stepping in was followed by “The usual?” and a couple of times when they saw me out smoking just as the bar opened, so they just poured it without even asking me, as there was little point.

Life is too short to drive a Hyundai and eat the same meal every day though. Unless the Hyundai is one of their more performant EV models, in which case it can at least be fun.

I can speak to normal ass sedans with manuals driving right past fancy 4 wheel drive vehicles in the snow.

That’s always been more about skill and tires than drivetrain I’d say. The excess weight of a 4 wheel drive SUV actually puts it at a disadvantage in most situations that don’t involve acceleration, too. They still have the same amount of braking wheels, but more weight to brake, etc.

You got it when they were still creating rustbuckets then. The newer ones have much stronger bodywork and don’t oxidize within 3 minutes upon seeing salted roads. Can’t speak for the long term reliability though, don’t know anyone who’s owned one for too long (only friend who owned a newish Mazda traded it in for a Volvo V90 after a few years because space)

I am tempted by new Mazdas because they now have some real nice engines available and they don’t do the whole “everything is touch” thing because apparently they actually care about safety… BUT… I’m salty that they don’t sell the CX90 here, only the CX80. I could really use the extra space nowadays.

  • Honestly look very readable to me, though I’m not sure on the timezone bit. Maybe they left it out? Ohterwise it’s 26th of January 2025, 18:41

It’s gonna be problematic when there’s 5 digit years, but other than that it’s… not good, but definitely less ambiguous than any “normally formatted” date where DD <= 12. Is it MM/DD or DD/MM? We’ll never fucking know!

Of course, YYYY-MM-DD is still the king because it’s both human readable and sortable as a regular string without converting it into a datetime object or anything.

  • Do you mean they sell phones with the oldest hardware in them?

Because they sure don’t have the longest software support cycle, they only seem to be getting 4 major Android versions. The iPhone 6s and the original SE got what, 6 major iOS versions? Both OSes get annual major versions. And of course, in both cases you get security updates for a few years after the end of new major versions.

You also get lower end hardware with the Fairphone, so that might change your opinion on whether you’ll still want to run it 15 years down the line.

There is plenty good about the Fairphone, like its’ repairability and the fact that they do simply sell you parts, but otherwise, you don’t get all that much bang for your back. Anything that’s called “responsible” or “sustainable” is always going to cost more simply because you can’t pay your employees more without your phones costing more

  • iPhones already have the longest software update cycle on the market (though many manufacturers are finally catching up), this could make a 7 year phone become a 15 year phone nowadays since the annual hardware changes are kinda meaningless. That’s ridiculous, in a good way. Of course it’s been possible for the many Android devices that support PostmarketOS for quite a while, but then those are phones that had way less original support and much smaller market share individually, so if this catches on, it could be even more impactful than Postmarket on Android phones.

Unfortunately that’s always been in small orgs lol

Though in one that grew rapidly, I was in the last batch of people whose mugs had no last names on them. I think my employment contract was like #80 or something and 3 years later when I left, there were like 200 or 300 people working there

Oh, duh. As a person who’s had the same firstletterlastname format email at a company I’ve worked at, I should’ve realized that lmao

Mostly I get given my first name or full name. Getting just firstname@company.com feels pretty awesome when it’s a common-ish name too.

Fair enough, I just hope that future trailers will be actually rendered real time. Scripted sure, but at least real time.

I love that they moved to an engine that they can find competent devs and artists for rather than having to train everyone in-house, but UE5 in particular seems to have so many issues. I think it might just be too much engine for some projects.

I finally decided to watch the trailer. Here’s what really bothers me:

CDPR give us our first glimpse into the world of The Witcher 4 as Ciri takes on a fearsome monster called the Bauk in this trailer pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5.

I know it’s just the first trailer, but this tells me nothing about what the game will look like, or run like. UE5 is notoriously hard to optimize properly for, and this is CDPR’s first game using it. I’m already pretty sure my 3060Ti won’t run it, but I’m sorta worried that we’re talking 5090Ti if I want to run it on my 1440p 120Hz screen, which isn’t even a high resolution or refresh rate nowadays.

I also don’t like that they replaced the voice actor, but then I think this is supposed to be a more mature Ciri, whereas Witcher 3 Ciri was still pretty young. So it makes sense.

Essentially you need to find some influencers you agree with. That are willing to call out a game for being shit, too.

Wait for game to be out, wait for your favourite YouTuber to review it. Read Steam reviews that aren’t oneliners or religious rants

Just don’t preorder. You know what I told my friends several years ago?

“Cyberpunk 2077 is the first game I’m actually considering preordering because it looks so awesome”

I didn’t. And I’m glad I didn’t. I still enjoyed the game a lot, just later, after it had been patched to hell and back.
