Way I see it the only reasons to use docker on nixos is if:

• you need many instances of the same service running on the same hw for some reason
• you’re trying to run a service that’s only packaged as a docker image

That said using nixos inside a docker container is an appealing proposition in that you get all the usual advantages of nix but can run it anywhere you can run docker images

If I understand correctly there’s not much pain, just adding one character

Better than the alias causing an issue or getting g removed later down the line

Until someone rewrites git history and screws up your build

I think the overconfident one should also be run

My point is that sure while it’s new and shiny everyone wants to try it out but I think over time people will get bored with self hosting lemmy and move onto other things. I might setup my own on a free tier VPS or something because that’s a thing for some reason, let Amazon Microsoft or oracle pay for it lol

As far as I understand it currently people host their own Lemmy instances just for the hell of it or out of the goodness of their heart

But the larger instances will end up costing more money and I’m doubtful that will be sustainable with no income
