  • Frankly wonderful. It needs scale, though not as much as people think. If the people that have moved stay involved we probably have scale for a lot of things now.

In terms of Beehaw, like it very much. Like the relative lack of Trolls too, and lack of ads, and presumably lack of behind the scenes content selection that other platform presumably does. The issue outstanding of course is the defederation with a few major instances which needs to be resolved somehow over time. For now fine. I to worry about how the Behaw team supports the site at scale be it man power or money. So I hope everyone considers that and does what they can.

I frankly come from the Mailing List, Usenet, and Compuserve days and frankly Lemmy meets the grade except maybe in some more technical areas like Law, Medicine, and Taxes. The FIRE community is small or non-existant, but this is really just Financial so we do have a community. Yes I came from Reddit, but I have used many Forum platforms before and sometimes still do. Lemmy and Behaw seems great.

Where Lemmy is a little short is a few bugs. The web UI is best, but it too has some bugs. Jarboa was not even complete when this torrent started but now it looks fairly complete but the latest update crashes a lot and still has some annoying bugs like setting the default view which use to work fine. I trust all of these will vanish with time so they do not hinder my resolve to stay here as long as we have enough scale. Sorry I cannot help with these other then put in bug reports if they persist. I do program and know Linux well, but the tech you guys use is not what I know which means it would take me 6 months or a year to do anything useful.

Anyway. All the best to everyone. Very appreciative. For what it is worth, I did drop a little in the tip jar to help with the presumably larger costs, and otherwise try not to bother the admins. They have kind of an impossible and under appreciated job.

Regarding “the one”. I think people misunderstand what it means. There is no magical one person out there to find. On the other hand once you find someone they can very well become “your one”. That really takes a lifetime though. My wife and I have been together over 25 years and each year has been better and deeper. After the first date mentally I thought it would be over in 3 months.

  • Highly recommend through friends. Also you need to give people time and a chance. Also do not confuse lust and surface stuff for long term love and compatibility After first date I thought probably be over in 3 months. Somewhere along the way it got out of hand and we have been together over 25 years.

  • The other thing about volt, I thought it might be a but rough and techie but it is not. Just like any other car. People also ask is it a pain to always plug it in. I find no. I have garage though and easy to just get out and plugin. No drama. Much better and way cheaper then gas and less smell and residue too. Just no comparison.

  • Personally I think it is a couple of things. My experience while being on the net for 35 years or so is that moderation on one hand and on the other hand a bit of a thick skin and a “Do Not Feed the Trolls” attitude is required. I have encountered trolls on Reddit and on Usenet which was way before Reddit. Yes I was on Voat awhile with you too… so I know what you mean.

Why? One it is a number of things. Good communication only happens when both parties are trying. So bad communication is more probable then good out of the gate. Plus the numbers game again. One troll can ruin the day of 100 other people. There always seem to some people that actually enjoy the trolling thing. Plus most of us are better at talking then listening. The internet is mostly a safe space for talking. Not so much always for listening.

Finally with all of its issues places like Reddit and other moderated forums are pretty effective. The people that do not like them are the Trolls. They will tend to leave and go to the free speech places which means those places have a much high density these days.

I also wonder if this has something to do with the breath of society and ways of being. There has always been part of society with this rough and tumble male culture where might makes right. Maybe it is some of that and how that part of society struggles with modern sensibilities.

    Anyway my theory.

  • Yes I see what you mean. Just a guess, maybe the app does not have the ability to show local communities. You can go into the communities view using the tool bar at the bottom. It is the second one from the left (next to the house icon). But on my app the 3-dot menu in the upper right of that view does nothing. The view just shows subscribed. I think maybe you have to go onto the web to see it. Or maybe I am just dense. Keep in mind Jerboa in particular is under development. Maybe they have not added that menu yet.
