What I really ask myself sometimes is why libraries and such things are not shared between the mobile OS community since they work on similar platforms. PostmarketOS has now implemented systemd afaik so I think a LOT of things will be similar.

Awesome report! Thanks. For me on postmarketos its the following:
What doesnt work at all:
What needs work:
Thank you very much for reaponding! Awesome to read about your efforts and mobian as an OS. How would you describe the daily driveability (on its own and compared to postmarketos)?
If I‘m not completely mistaken, the chip is the same as on my oneplus6. I run postmarketOS/phosh but camera is dead for now. I dont have enough insight to grasp if its just a legal issue or more. I feel like the two projects are quite similar but the differences are hard to grasp really. Whats your background and do you have experience with postmarketos? How do you experience mobians installation and documentation?
Have a good one.
Of course. Many devices are mainlined and get the exact same updates as PCs.
No problem. Feel free to update on your journey to mobile linux.
I think you are looking at this from a different angle than me. PostmarketOS is a small project which is very dependent on community contributions. The fairphone 4 is community supported and this means it works pretty well. See wiki for more info: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices
Most people who come from the proprietary „give money, get product“ world think only official support counts and they will get anything more than community support which is not the case. In the open source world, if you dont have the skills to repair your device, you ask someone to help and often they do for free. If you need it done NOW, you pay someone for it. Its not different than in proprietary land. Fast, good, cheap. Pick two! ;)
Hi there, ubuntu touch is just ubuntu. It has been taken over by the community after ubuntu abandoned it iirc.
Anyway, its just linux so you can install apps and stuff that run on linux. Beware, not all apps are mobile friendly (yet).
I personally am involved in the postmarketOS microcosm (pretty much the same idea but based on alpine). Works pretty great but I cant tell you how it compares to ubuntu touch since I have no personal experience with ubuntu touch but from what I hear, its kinda cool.
If you are somewhat adept with linux you could download an emulator and check the features for yourself before you buy a phone. That way you could get an idea of the look and feel. But beware, setting up an emulator will be a lot more work than flashing a phone is.
Let me know if you need more info.
Good luck.
Sounds like an awesome idea. Every person investing some brain power into FOSS is a win for the community.
Thats really awesome. Thanks for sharing your experience. We need more people to talk about it and show that its not only for some unknown elite to help with foss development.
Thats the beauty of it. You dont need to code for any large project to be able to contribute. We need people test it on old phones (and new ones if they wish) and report back their findings in an organized fashion. We need people to tinker with the cameras so we can get them to work at some point, we need help with proper documentation, people to spread the word, you name it.
But to answer your question, its not one language. Its linux, the base is C, then there are the desktop environments. Some is config files written in yaml, some is css. Most people dont comprehend how ginormous linux as a platform really is and how much potential there is to help.
Check postmarketOS.org for opportunities to help out.
Sorry but thats not true. A lot of seevices bake ads into their video signal. Neither a dhcp nor a dns can change that. You need to have something that reads that signal and decides on that.
More importantly, mozilla is in google‘s pocket due to google being by far the largest financial contributor. Expect them to ruin firefox at some point. Also, the recent ad drama should have taught you that one lone competitor does not make a market.
I dont know if they legally can but that has never stopped them do anything.
Yes, fuck apple. But also fuck all politicians who are not as stringent with legislature as the EU.
I can only comment on postmarketOS as I‘m using that on a near daily basis. It is great and fund to use. It’s not end user ready yet though. Normal stuff works. Watching videos on firefox or a native app, music, phone, messages. All no problem. Just cameras are a problem atm, next to some quirks that need ironing out.
I‘m using postmarketOS and helping with development.
PostmarketOS. It has its flaws but it is reliable and very versatile. If more people would adapt it, I bet the flaws would be gone soon as well.
In stark contrast to graphene and other android derivatives, this is actual linux (alpine), not degoogled android.
Insane work. My dollar a week is obviously well spent on you. :)
