Long time linux user and tinkerer. Currently working as a devops engineer. Very positive to the idea of decentralized internet platforms. :)

What are the plans around admin tools?
Instance owners currently gets notified when someone has reported a user for spamming or trolling, but frequently it’s a user that is not on his instance, so he can’t do anything about it. Wouldn’t it be better if instance owners got notified only when they can take actual action (like the user being registered on their instance)?
But can it do excel? /s
I think without the constant attempts from big tech at making people “engage” (meaning, making them upset and alienated from eachother so they post something), we have a good chance. :)
I love it. And notice how most people are incredibly nice to eachother here? I remember when browsing reddit sometimes, it was easy to feel like people were really trying to insult eachother, push eachother down and act like they were the smartest little person ever to be born on the planet.
I see none of that here. Its such a wonderful place right now.
Thanks for your hard work! Lemmy is really taking off and it’s showing how people can communicate without a corporation in the middle. Somehow this has been lost on younger internet users. They think they need to go to some big tech site to connect to other people. Who made those guys our overlords? Fuck them.
It wasn’t glorifying them, it was showing how they are messed up in their heads. All of them were trying to get approval from their evil father, and he never showed any love or compassion for any of them. Actually he only respected when they were evil themselves.
I didn’t like any of the characters either except for some comedy relief moments. But these guys are sick, living in their own world, separated from normal humans, which only contributes to their sick mental state.
All they cared about was more influence, money and power, and they would stab eachother in the back to get it. Sort of like kings in the past.
Yeah I didn’t understand it was intentionally made to be like that until someone pointed it out. :)
Yep you need a domain name pointing to your instance when you run the installation of Lemmy and it will create a let’s encrypt https cert for your site automatically.
I host my own because it’s cheap, less than 10 dollars per month, and I wanted to contribute to the growth of the Lemmy community.
Also turns out that it’s another benefit to this: I don’t have to get involved in the entire political debate of who federated with who. I just subscribe to communities I want anywhere.
Oh wow, specially the communities view is gold. Thank you! This will be great to share people also when reddit third party clients disappears.
Arch. Super happy with it. Been running it on all computers for a decade or so.
Free speech for me, not for thee. :)
I’m watching the drama from lemmy.today and it’s very nice to not get involved in the politics of all this. It’s still super small and maybe it will always be, but that’s not a problem since we are using federated tech and can take part of every community that exists anywhere. :)
Using a small instance offers the luxary of being neutral in all this.
Big tech will launch platforms trying to do exactly that if it becomes popular enough.
They won’t own it but it will be like Google search, pretty much a default for the majority of zombies who don’t care that it’s big tech behind it.
Put a Instagram login on it and one click invite to all Instagram and WhatsApp users and you suddenly have millions of active users.
Then you continue to monitor what’s being discussed, train some AI on the data that people are providing for you free of charge, and then sell the AI service back to people for a fixed price per month.
I think there are huge bugs around this, considering that I have had this happen a lot myself but also mentioned in the sign up to my own instance - people specifically saying that they couldn’t sign up on other instances due to spinning forever on signing up.
All that is needed is error handling here. Is the email not being sent? Is something else happening? No info at all to the user.
I suspect email since when I either turned it off or configured it correctly, things seem to work.
I don’t drink almost at all. One of those boring people who don’t drink alcohol on the weekends like a normal person. Sorry. Just don’t like feeling like shit.
I hated it. There was almost no actual sci fi, and I didn’t like any of the people. Did they have any good qualities about them? To me they were all just annoying, self obsessed, people I would not want to be around for even a minute.
Salma Hayek, was she payed per amount of times she could say disgusting things and talking about asses? Also what was the entire thing with how she was Salma Hayek so she can do what she wants? She is like a really bad actress. Where is the confidence coming from?
Also going to shit in a church? Why are these characters being so disgusting? Specially all the females were genuinely disgusting. Why? Is it empowering for females now to act like teenage men or something? I don’t get it.
In previous black mirror seasons, I felt that it had actual nice people. But this season I really felt like a bomb could go off and nobody would be missed.
Reddit drama had been fun to follow, lots of twists, evil bad guys and heroes. :)
No worries :)
