ICE vehicles are at best 30% efficient, Coal power is at best 45% efficient. Even with transmission and motor losses, that’s still pretty close to net even, but completely excludes the energy and environmental cost of refining crude into petroleum, where coal is burned largely as-is.

So we’d still be better off moving to EVs even if it was all in a vacuum with 100% coal power and we weren’t already replacing coal with renewables.
