Wouldn’t the risk be though, that an instance devoted to music, for example, would mean that all music discussion would fall under the control of a single mod/team, opening us up to the kind of controlling shenanigans Reddit was pulling?
And were the instance to go down, it would take everything on that topic with it.
I realise that people would still be free to make their own community on any topic on any instance, but if instances were topic themed, they would likely soon dominate any “independent” communities on that same topic.
All that said, I still have a limited understanding of the fediverse, so perhaps it’s not an issue.
Good question. Similarly I was talking with someone the other day about what a user should be called (Lemming?) and what the act of using Lemmy might be called (also lemming!)
I like Lemmunity :-)
You could search on https:// browse.feddit.de - but it would depend what name had been given to the community (if one exists of course)
Had a look myself, and there is https:// lemmy.ml/c/wheeloftime :-)
If you build it, they will come.
One place you could try is https://browse.feddit.de - this makes it MUCH easier to find communities across all instances. And it has the busiest ones at the top if you just want to join those with most people in them.
This is a great question - I’m new myself, and while it all feels very welcoming and friendly so far, I’d hate to think that there was some established Lemmiquette that I was unwittingly breaching.
I’d love to see this place become a genuine alternative to Reddit, but not if it pisses off the people who were here from the start.
Lol! Definitely something I can imagine doing with my sausage fingers!
What’s the story about the Lemmy admins? Hadn’t heard anything about that.
I guess over time those empty ones will either get going or die off. Hopefully most are “build it and they will come” type deals.
Fair point re mod tools/options, I’ll try and work it out!
EDIT - found it:
I’m using Jerboa, and I don’t think those mod options are available yet, but in a browser I was able to do it if I wanted.
Ugh, what a pain! Hopefully this sort of stuff is just teething problems though!
That’s tremendously useful, thanks for that.
There’s a community called New Communities which might be useful for this:
https://lemmy.world/c/newcommunities
EDIT, actually Darkfoe’s comment has a much more useful link!
Not automatically - I saw someone else saying that they sat with two browser windows open and just copied their subscribed communities from one profile to another. Bit time consuming (he/she said 20 minutes), and it wouldn’t carry across your post/comment history, but it’s a sort of solution.
This is an incomplete understanding as I’m new too, but I think that if you know it exists and have the URL, you can search for the URL itself to find that community.
And in doing so, I think it makes your instance aware of the specific community, so that in future other members of your instance can search with a simpler term and not need the URL.
Over time, most instances should become aware of most communities. I think…
No worries :-)
Thanks for this - there’s at least one more, but I can’t recall the URL.
I had (still have) a Mastodon account, but I could never really get my head round it. Finding Lemmy a lot more intuitive (for all its various quirks). Should maybe try Mastodon again now.
