TIL! Thank you for the tip :)
I never know whether adding the direct link will just annoy people on different instances, haha, may have a slight overthinking issue there. But thanks for adding it! :D
So, update. I talked to the MakerTube admin over on Mastodon and they admitted that funding is pretty much always going to be a problem especially if popular creators join and make big videos. But they seem to be giving it their best shot, and I figured, what have I got to lose other than a bit of time and a few dollars in donations? So I’m giving it a whirl.
Just did a write-up of my impressions of the whole thing over at !peertube@lemmy.ml if you’re at all invested!
Absolutely, I already donate to my three most used Lemmy servers and have actually been looking to get into PeerTube so I’d have no problem donating there too. Problem is I just don’t know if my couple of dollars a month would equal a net loss.
Will come back and update this thread once I’ve found out!
I make videos that are usually somewhere between 10-20mins long, and I know that video storage really adds up fast. My worry with things like this is that I basically can’t afford to donate as much as I would be costing. But maybe there’s some kind of relevant info on that somewhere that I just can’t immediately see. Definitely worth an investigate, at least!
I code in a few languages and I’ve always wanted to know more than one “human” language but efforts in that area have more or less consistently failed (exception being Esperanto because that’s easy, but since hardly anyone speaks it it’s not exactly useful).
Despite my interest in both I doubt there’s much of a correlation when you look at programmers (or polyglots) as a group, though. For all we call all of these things “languages” there’s a pretty big distinction and difference in complexity and approach between the computer and human ones, it’s a whole different hobby.
I’d compare coding more to other hobbies that involve making things. I knit a jumper, I develop a video game…scratches same itch.
Or possibly problem-solving hobbies. I work out how to adjust a sewing pattern to fit, I solve a tricksy sudoku…again same itch.
Since OP is pulling a Gandalf and keeping his secrets, maybe you’d care to share how you found yourself in such a no-shit scenario?
None really, got all my crafts here already and my other account has all kinds of gamedev communities to follow. Now that Star Trek is here and a couple of people have set up Eurovision communities, not to mention UKCasual is here, I’m pretty sorted!
Just need more people to join in with the ones that exist, now.
Sounds like you have the most important part of the hobby down already, at least!
(see my reply to the other comment for various maybe-helpful links)
Well, I don’t want to be That Person but technically I made a (long) video for total crochet beginners that I know quite a few people have used to great success. It’s frontloaded with theory though and more for people like me who learn by understanding the “why” of what they’re doing.
If you prefer to do it in shorter chunks or without all the tedious theory, which let’s face it most people do, I’ve heard really good things about this Bella Coco series which has, um, slightly more views than mine 😅
There’s a fairly new (aren’t they all) crochet community over at !crochet@lemmy.ca (direct link) that seems very nice so far, I’m sure they’d love to help with your first attempts too!
