Un Dorian Gray sin pasado, ni patria ni bandera.

I’m just a guy in the #pnw who likes going on adventures, and playing games with friends.

Three things I love: the Oxford Comma, irony, and missed opportunities.

  • I nuked a 13- and an 11-year old account yesterday after commenting over then deleting each comment. I’m a bit sad, but if I’m honest, I’ve been wanting a reason to drop reddit for a while now. It just hasn’t been the same in a long time. It’s still young here, but I like what this has the potential to become rather than what might have been if things were different over there. Ever onward!

  • There’s a decent chance it will. The fediverse is—generally speaking—a fairly friendly and welcoming place. That’s in part to it’s decentralized nature and individual moderation tools. Bad actors can be blocked on an individual level (I just blocked /u/donaldtrump last night because I do not want to see stupid parody accounts and just like that he’s gone) as well as on an instance level for anyone not following the rules.

Each instance has their own rules about how to behave, so the bigots and whatnot get booted if they cause problems. Eventually they find an equally terrible server that will have them and once they start up again, that instance can be defederated, which is basically like cutting off the bridge to their island… no way to communicate. Eventually they end up alone or with equally terrible people on other instances.

That’s not to say that the fediverse doesn’t have it’s share of problems or is perfect, but we’re working hard to try and keep this a decent place to be.

  • That is a challenge we have, but I think the answer is to just go for it. I’m doing the same here with kbin which is another option for viewing the same content (I’m responding to you from there) but with some extra features. I feel like an advertisement, but at the same time a lot of new people just don’t know what else is out there in the fediverse, so I’m trying to encourage exploring and finding what’s right for you.

  • Yeah, Jerboa is an android app for Lemmy instances.

Since you’re new, also check out kbin which is similar to Lemmy but with some other features. You can still access the same content (I’m responding to you from kbin), and has some access to the microblogging sites as well. You might like it, you might not. But there are so many options in the fediverse you may as well explore for a while.

  • I’ve been active on Mastodon/Calckey about the same amount of time. I never cared for microblogging sites before, but taking the time to find, follow, comment and make internet “friends” has really made it a pleasant experience.

Reddit I’ve been on since before the Digg migration, but was never super active there, more of a lurker. So I’m hoping to do better here as well.
