Ok, that definition does not define how people acted during the pandemic either. Some people were even actively harming others.

I used to be an Ayn Rand libertarian minarchist when I was a teenager. There’s a bunch of reasons I disagree with it now, but the utter failure of people’s butthead behavior during the pandemic is just the latest things that you’d have to completely ignore to maintain egotistical altruism is something that can be relied on in the real world. Not really interested in a discussion about it; I’ve had all of them long ago and I don’t think we’d have anything to budge the other person.

I’m sorta in the third category. It used to taste like soap. Then I purposefully ate it a handful of times. Something flipped in my perception of it and now I like it. I read the soap thing is genetic, but I think what happened to me is more like the compounds that are shared between smelly feet and cheese where the context defines how the scent is interpreted. I’m very sensitive to some flavors. I’ve only had pine nuts that didn’t taste rancid once in my life and that rancid flavor gets stuck in my mouth for hours. Truffle oil just tastes like mold. But Bleu cheeses taste fine. Taste and its interpretation is complex.

I’ve had great success with being lazy and quitting early. I changed majors. I didn’t stick with guitar because I didn’t enjoy the practice itself, but I’ve been doing martial arts for over twenty years. Had a bunch of short relationships until I found the one that stuck. Every job has been better than the last because I knew a bunch of things I hated about the ones before to avoid and kept growing my skill set. Quitting something is great.

Mods are one thing, users are another. Didn’t the vegans leave because users kept coming in and ignoring community guidelines, then go around the mods to disregard the community guidelines not because they care about animals but because they don’t like vegans? The dog pile was pretty gross from what I remember. None of the meta discussions focused on mod behavior; all of them were anti vegan circle jerks.

Darn, I’m really going to miss it then. lemmy.world has not been worth keeping in my feed generally.

Ever if they’re not scammers, there will be many like them that are. Many people will not know the difference (see ivermectin, homeopathy, the supplements industry, gerson therapy). I get that this is a desperate measure for people in desperate situations, but that’s exactly the kind of mark a scammer wants. I hope they do some good, but I also expect tragedies and lots of them.
