No but it isn’t wise to generalise two of Europe’s less… regulated countries to just “Europe”. Pretty much every European country north of the Alps and west of the Vistula have mandatory smoke alarms/fire detection. It’s not a mystery why. 5000 Europeans a year die in residential fires and social housing, ie paid for by the tax payers, is disproportionately damaged by fire every year.

You want to register a view when the video has loaded, it has begun to play, and quite likely after some arbitrary percentage of the video.

This is all front end information. How much of the video was made available to the front end to play isn’t really relevant.

Twitter definitely was not any attempt to emulate the function of SMS.

I think a big thing that is missed is that when it’s a case of “homophobic politician turns out to be banging dudes nightly” you need to compartmentalise the two problems - stupid homophobia, and the much more specific “this politician and their political party are very obviously not trying to govern in good faith and instead will say literally anything for power”. Both are bad. The first one is a thing that will take a century or two to die away mostly and even then will pop up sometimes if we get complacent.

The second one is the thing that we might be able to fix, like, on a four year cycle.
