don’t waste your time, the scammers have polluted peoples ideals on it for the time being. can’t say i blame them. Next round will be national ids and regulated trading channels, the users won’t even know or care that it’s blockchain.

I hosted ad-free invision and phpbb forums for almost a decade before the centralized services started. I do it because I like social media and understand the value of a vibrant commons. I’ve been working with computers since I was a child so hosting yet-another-app-server is not really that big of a deal and gives my users and myself a place we can call home on the internet.
The out-of-pocket cost is minimal for a small instance, for larger instances scaling issues are going to hit eventually and costs will go beyond what 1-person will bear without complaint.
Highly recommend more smaller instances.
My server costs me only about $5 USD a month and I can host thousands of users without much additional effort (my sites before would usually run to ~10k users).

Echoing others here, UI/UX is a big one, its SOOOO close, there are just some minor bugs (that might be major under the covers) that if corrected could really smooth over the end user exp.
Biggest personal complaint I have now is all the links that just pop me onto another instance. I am on a federated network, why should I get bounced to other instances when I click links on my own?
If for some reason my instance cannot get the content, THEN produce the real link and I can choose if I care that much or not.

this works on the same principals as fidonet, UseNet, email, etc. These protocols are more like fundamental services. The idea behind these was that instead of running a bunch if proprietary garbage you would run things that support A LOT of standard protocols. Why? Because NO ONE should be allowed to own our communications but ourselves.
The corps did not build these networks, we did. Software will improve over time, OSS shows the way.
i agree, i work in the industry, but bringing it up on socials outside of crypto communities has been just a way to get flamed of late.
