      They don’t though, their last common ancestor is a precursor to the modern wolf, but they did come from a different species (though the separation of the species is incredibly recent, biologically, only as short as 30,000 years ago)

          Honestly I kinda like this fun fact myself though

          And to be fair, the thing that’s the common ancestor we do call it a Wolf, the name is “Pleistocene Wolf”, it’s just genetically not a wolf

          Like the tree goes

          • thing that’s kinda like a wolf
            • thing that’s kinda like a dog
              • thing that’s kinda like a dog
                • thing that’s kinda like a dog
                  • modern dog
            • other thing that’s kinda like a wolf
              • etc
                • etc
                  • modern wolf

          And they can still interbreed, so not that far away genetically, just with (usually, occasionally not) infertile offspring
