The design of these emojis were the best in my opinion, but I hated how they automatically replaced my ASCII faces in messages

agreed, i’m glad most modern messengers have the option to disable automatically converting ASCII smilies to emoji :) :D
using the backwards smile is sometimes an alternative, but it’s too cursed for regular use (:
