I have no idea why, don’t ask :)
Ugggggggggggggg why am I like this?
EDIT: This is way more complicated than I thought 🤷. I’m not going to do this but I had some fun with numbers while I did. I also came up with an idea for a calendar based on average development of a particular native plant in every part of the world. Basically, in every city in the world it is someone’s job to consistently cultivate the most common native plant and record the development of said plant. That development is then somehow averaged out with everyone else on the planet, showing what time of year it is for plants. A week or month could be equivalent to x amount of development on the world’s plants. Could be a great idea for a solarpunk book…
I have a book about math across different cultures that has a lot of really cool descriptions of different calendars in a variety of cultures - I particularly remember one that had to do with when the fish would start showing up to spawn near their island, iirc - and I’d recommend it here but I can’t for the life of me remember the title right now. I’ll try to remember and dig it up later when I’m less asleep.
If you do end up finding it let me know. That sounds super interesting.
From a cultural perspective, I found the Mayan counting system to be quite intuitive for a base-20 system. We’re used to base 10 or base 60 (clocks) so it’s interesting to think how that number system evolved in their society. Having five fingers probably helps.
