They could have long joined the Russian or Chinese bloc by now. They already had their working civilian fission reactors by now if they did. But they are too proud to be a vassal. They want to be their own bloc.
Early on, Iran’s revolution was explicitly socialist in nature. That got subsumed pretty quick by the clerics taking over, but they still followed a lot of socialism in the way they structured their society.
