Units are meant to be cross-language. If you want stupid units and ad-hoc abbreviations, use the imperial system. They have PSI (lbf/in²) and mph (mi/h), where one has “p” for reciprocity (“/”) and another nothing. Yes, things change. No country used metric in medieval times, now It’s mostly just the US that refuses to. It’s their lack of experience that leads to abominations like “kph”, “sqm”, “kgf”, “cc” or “MFD” (micro? milli? megafarad?). Only minor updates have needed to be made to the metric system: most recently the kilogram is no longer based on a piece if metal in Paris but constants of the universe. Unless you’re weighing to 8+ significant figures, there is no difference. Meanwhile the US ton/metric ton (10%) and mile/nautical mile (15%) difference causes confusion somewhere every day.
