i’m torn about this image. on the one hand, it feels true. but i also used a text translator to figure out what it says:

вот так и встретились

деградация и ванять

That’s how we met - degradation and vanity

so this got me thinking … is it really a degradation? i’m torn about this, because i tend to think that women are the best creatures in existence, so it’s more of an improvement than a degradation. on the other hand, does this view maybe fall short of the universal approach that i try to have about all my ideas? what if it is not universally true that women are better, but only my personal view? what if somebody else can have a legitimately different viewpoint? and what if “vanity” is indeed the ulterior motive? is vanity an acceptable quality in this fast-moving world?

what’s your thoughts about this?

As much as I like the discussion here, I’d prefer if we don’t post non English memes that are hard to properly translate. For all I knew, ванять could be some niche slur. It’s just too hard to moderate.

Russian here. The actual translation is likely “That’s how they met – degradation and stinking”. It was mistranslated because there is an intentional typo in the word вонять because word ванять is a meme word.

Patriarchy systematically defines men as default humans and women as lesser ones. Doing X like a girl is always an insult. In a patriarchal society, a man which embraces his femininity degrades his status. A feminine man is tainted. The patriarchal concepts of men and women carry specific characteristics. Men are confident, dominant, strong, dangerous. Women are caring, calm, forgiving, vain. I attach much more value towards characteristics traditionally understood as feminine so I could say women are better… but I don’t because fuck patriarchy, fuck gender norms & fuck sexism. Be queer, do crimes~

Good and bad people come in all sorts of shapes, woman, man and everything in between. Still having opinion about this falls down to expirience during life and teaching while growing up, and while it is ultimately you who makes the decision it is based on the former in it of itself.

Having opinions usually reflect the little world you live in, and while they are here as a generalization of a subject, don’t make them dictate your life as there are exceptions to every rule.

What I’m trying to say in a roundaboud way is that, while I don’t agree with you, it is not me who you should be asking this, as I am unfamiliar with your country, town, way of growing up etc. If you want to know if you’re in the right or wrong it is best to ask someone who is close to you, like family or close friends, or a profesional in the field. Not a rando on a internet who knows nothing of your life. This way you will just get many conflicting answers from people with their own circumstances and none of your own.

Still what humans do well is judge by our own standards so in the end we do end up forcing our ideas and morals on others and majority always rules. I’m more of an exception than a standard.

Neither is universally better. You can try to have a universal/general view, but you are always limited by your own perception, upbringing, needs etc

Honestly, the translation didn’t help me either as a non-native English speaker. I’m not too sure, but could it be “Тщеславие”? (English Wikipedia link)

vanity refers to subjects without interior value. like a car is valuable because it can do stuff, i.e. move you from X to Y. a beautiful painting can do no such thing, therefore it has no inherent point. we only attach meaning to it because we are swayed by our subjective interpretation, not because of objective criteria. the logical conclusion is that no generally-understood value can be attached to sentimental objects, therefore a person looking for a price-tag will always fall short.

that and the story of the vanir shape the understanding of vanity:

the vanir were said to be brave and gentle, but ultimately peaceful and not greedy for power. so, they never strived for more, and thus stagnated, which is why we associate vanity with (economic) idleness. quite the opposite of the modern way of life.
