My neighbors always comment enviously about the amount of fireflies in my yard every year, and I always tell them it’s because I don’t rake my leaves the year before, but every year at this time my yard is the only one in the neighborhood with leaves on it.
People just can’t understand that their behavior affects the environment. Or maybe they understand that if they admit that this behavior does, they’d be forced to reassess how other behavior might be causing environmental changes, which would unravel the backwards world view they’re trying so hard to cling to.
I plan on replacing most of my yard with native plants and getting a sign explaining the benefits, but for now I just deal with being the “bad” neighbor. I didn’t really care that much about what they think of me.
RIP fireflies, butterflies, and other insects.

Have you considered putting a sign up in your yard to explain why you don’t rake them up?
I’ve seen this done with native gardens and the response is usually positive.
