i think we just need a new term for that, if a normal person cannot do it themselves with some reading, practice, and reasonable purchases, then it isn’t DIY.
Like, if you’re a professional woodworker it’s not DIY if you record yourself building a fancy solid mahogany escritoire…
At the same time it kinda is since many of these creators openly share advanced schematics, 3d files for printing, CNC templates, circuit board designs, and in some cases even full on instructions. Of course the average person doesn’t even have a 3d printer let alone something like a CNC machine, still with someone that has the tools and experience it can be done diy (naturally if you don’t have the experience all the advanced schematics and files wont mean anything).
yeah that’s sorta why i want a separate term for it, it IS good but when we call it DIY it sets poor expectations and doesn’t really benefit anyone other than people who want to clickbait.
The channels I watch generally don’t call it anything, they just say “how to make x” or “making y”. The main problem with term DIY is people assume that means anyone with no experience and just random scrap they have lying around can by default do it.
