And that’s a pretty big hatchback.

That would penalize EVs, which I suppose is fair if you’re trying to account for wear and tear on the road.

Though I have thought a lot about something like this for Montreal. Currently, our parking vignettes are priced according to your vehicle’s engine size.

This leads to funny situations where a Mazda 3 with a 2.5L Skyactiv engine is getting absolutely fucked while a big ass 2.0T SUV is paying less in vignette fees.

I went from an Elantra with a 2.0L engine to a K4 with a 1.6T engine, and my sportier K4 costs me less in vignette fees than my slow Elantra. The reasoning is that the SAAQ only exposes the engine size on the registration papers rather than the dimensions and weight of the vehicle, but I still think it’s stupid.

EVs are generally heavier than their ICE counterparts due to their battery pack. Energy density isn’t something EVs beat ICE on yet.

There is nothing preventing having slightly different weight classes for ICE and EVs. The latter shouldn’t get a free pass but battery weight should be considered. In Some country that is already the case that EVs have slightly different weight based rules.

It only penalises EVs if you do it instead of, rather than in addition to a petrol excise. If there’s an excise that forces ICE vehicles to pay for their pollution, that would more than offset any extra rego cost related to road damage.

      That would penalize EVs

The difference in weight isn’t as large as between an SUV and a sedan, and EVs should already get subsidies/tax-advantages based on pollution which should more than make up for it.
