I haven’t had a conversation of more than a couple sentences in two days. In that time I’ve driven 6 hours, alone. Eaten at a restaurant of another culture where most people were speaking a language I don’t, alone. Gone to a concert, alone. Eaten a continental breakfast (which I love), alone. Toured an entire art museum, alone. Walked several miles through a city park, along the shoreline, and around the entirety of a large pier, alone. I get this comic.

But at the same time, I started to learn to give/get self-hugs a long time ago, and even doing things alone I still have connections to others. I listened to a book while driving that I may suggest for book club. The restaurant I ate at was recommended to me by a stranger I knew for just a few minutes at a music festival three months ago. The band I saw is the one I listened to as I started getting out of the grief pit from my dad’s passing, and I thought of him a few times throughout the show and it felt good. I don’t know that I was thinking of anyone during the continental breakfast, but it was pretty tasty in a mediocre way. At the museum I saw paintings that took me all the way back to elementary school when I first learned about them, and I felt connected to my younger self. Walking alone I could casually observe the groups around me and appreciate a brief glimpse into their dynamics (and their costumes!).

So for now, I have no hugs as I go about my day, but it’s okay. I can get by, and eventually there will be hug-filled days ahead.

    Thanks for the comic!

did you know: you get free hugs in the subway at peak transport hours, because everybody’s standing so tightly there’s no way you’re gonna fall even if you don’t hold yourself.

I think it is the common experience of being lonely surrounded by people as an illustrated example, but yours is funnier

ah yeah, I get it, the ole “not alone but still lonely” thing.
That’s so normal for me that I didn’t even really see it in the second panel hehe.

But getting tossed around in public transit is a thing I’ve experienced a lot in the before times^^

      yeeessss huggies <3

it was supposed tobe kinda like this:

      • the text implies that hugs could be helpful
      • but the character in the scene is not receiving any

its kinda meant to be contrast thingy.

I’d settle for having a conversation, like an actual conversation not a braindead “how’s it going, good, you”.

halloween is basically just for kids here, since it was only introduced in 1997. it’s all commercial. when i was a kid the time to dress up and go around asking for candy was during easter, when the witches are said to fly to their secret mountain hideout.

as such, i’ve never really come in contact with the more… mundane? traditions. are you just roasting pumpkin seeds, or can you do more with them? roasted pumpkin seeds are great.

Just roasting, I grew up in the middle of nowhere but when I was really young our parents drove us into the city to go trick or treating after dinner at a Hawaiian place though I don’t think they had anything to do with Halloween. As we got older (and I mean like 10) we started to help decorate a haunted house that the church kids would come to after a much lamer imo trunk or treat. Sadly the first time I lived in an area where I would get trick or treaters was during COVID.

i’m not much for visitors personally but if you want them and can’t get them that’s sad. has it picked back up again since then or is there a noticeable difference in the amount of people out and about on halloween since covid?
