Theft was so bad at the Home Depot in Cleveland they replaced the cashiers. Now it’s awkward. They didn’t bring back the old counter so the cashier uses the self checkout for you

I really dislike that most groceries don’t have one big line that feeds into registers. It’s just stupid to allow me to get stuck behind someone who’s arguing about a coupon for 5 minutes while people who came after me flow through the other registers.

The grocery by me also never seems to have enough checkout staff to keep the lines short. There’s a lot of people with full carts, and no express line. I end up waiting for 10 minutes to buy some bread and bananas .

More grocery stores around me are creating this: one line to a huge silo of like 15+ self checkouts and one employee that just like corrals you to whatever is open and helps out with issues

In grocery stores that have more trust for the community this can work really well however it may be a double edged sword: Wegmans has a very pleasant experience for example. The scanners are effective, they don’t bother weighing your bag to make sure you didn’t steal, they can even auto identify produce with shocking accuracy, and they still keep several manned lanes open. However, that last point is key as Wegmans has rolled out facial recognition technology to track shoppers. That is probably the main reason they feel comfortable lowering their guard in those ways and it’s far worse imo. What’s even more fucked up is that this is mainly widely known bc New York requires them to post signs informing people who enter the store of this, whereas other states where they operate like PA and NJ don’t have this regulation and they silently track customers

It’s frustrating beyond belief that once again we have to trade our dignity for a reasonable experience

Checkers (in South Africa) has two big lines, each serving about 10 registers. I imagine having two is slightly more efficient than having one, because the next person doesn’t have to walk as far

The Costco near me used to have one single line for all lanes of self checkout machines, it was great. Then some months ago they switched it to a line per lane and I hate it so much. I think it’s just stupid “perceptions” — people probably just “feel like” it takes longer when it’s one long line, so they’re happy to wait longer in a shorter line because visually “their turn is coming soon.”

100% about perception, but doesn’t mean it’s not valid. One long line that’s constantly moving is better than a small line that’s stuck for a while. Also, as you mentioned, it prevents issues when one of the checkouts is stuck for whatever reason. The line would still move, just a bit slower.

I end up waiting for 10 minutes to buy some bread and bananas

I could literally walk down to the end of the street and buy my bananas from the gentleman who’s been operating the same produce stall for the last decade, then a loaf of bread from the bakery next door, and be home within 10 minutes. I don’t want to make assumptions, but if bread and bananas requires you to travel to a packed general store, wherever you live, it’s a city planning hellscape.

Hey that’s all of Norway more or less. There’s bakeries you could buy bread in for the low low price of 10 grocery breads, but you won’t find anything else edible in a stall or small shop unless you’re in one of the biggest cities.

I’m a believer in a future where there’s only grocery stores in norway, everything else will be bought online and shipped.

I don’t want this, but the benefits are obviously that you’d have to pay less employees. People don’t really shop locally here, they go in stores to try sizes and then order it online for cheaper, that’s the why.

You live in the suburbs and drive to the shopping malls because the blacks can’t afford the cars to get there.

There are some smaller grocers that don’t typically have long lines nearby, but I don’t think they have the big tubs of peanut butter I lust after, or a few other things I sometimes get. I should probably check out the smaller grocers anyway

Oh come on, there’s got to be a dollar general somewhere at the end of your driveway.

For those that don’t know, Dollar General is an infestation of a chain store. They are almost ubiquitous in small rural towns. They can act as an old time general store selling everything from candy, to clothes, simple household goods, and milk and a few other more shelf stable groceries. And it’s all of less quality than a temu steak. They are also ineradicably poor employers. With low pay, no benefits, and worse staffing.

I’ve learned a few things standing in grocery lines. Look for cashiers on the younger side, they just tend to work quicker and less small talk. Look for lines with no elderly, they are the ones who complain about the price tag showing 5 cents cheaper or an expired coupon, pay by check etc… Look for no kids with parents, the parents get distracted and things just go wrong.

It’s not a perfect system, but it’s saved me many times.

There are some exceptions to the “no kids” rule, which I sometimes represent.

If my wife is out of town or has all-day plans with some of our friends, you will occiasinally see my son and me at the local grocery store with a small cart full of products of questionable nutritional value that seem best suited to an upcoming LAN party.

He might waste some of my time while shopping, but when it’s time to check out we usually hit a self checkout and are out of there in seconds.

Time sink indicates something that takes time. Time is sunk in a time sink.

Time sync would indicate a synchronizing of time.

Oh man this is one of my pet peeves. You’re standing in line, then in front of the cashier. All to pay for your stuff. Then it’s this whole production werin a look of surprise that, yes you do actually have to pay, followed by 5 minutes of digging through the bag for your card.

Most people pay with a card. You can usually tap your card as soon as the cashier scans something.

The corporation that runs the store does not care how long you wait or what your experience while waiting is like. They’re likely one of just a handful of grocery stores you can easily get to, they or another corpo just like them own those other stores too, and they know you’ll keep coming back because you very nearly have to. So long as there is enough space in that cavernous warehouse for you to wait they don’t care if it takes you hours and makes you miserable, they get paid either way, at most they’ll hire more security to keep the place pacified. Grocery stores have become a food distribution cartel, often a food distribution monopoly.

Self checkout has gotten better. Back in the day they didn’t work for crap. But it’s still often a matter of luck of the draw and whether or not there is a god somewhere that decides to piss on your parade that day.

Never had any issue like that.

      • If someone doesn’t show up for the random bag check in 30 seconds or so it just automatically skips it.
      • If you scan alcohol it just beeps on the hand-terminal of the person overseeing the self checkout area and they take one look and click approve if you look old enough. You can just keep scanning while that happens. If you look young enough that you need to show ID then they usually show up within seconds anyway.

The rest of the things you mention just never happen.

Self checkout is a godsend. No more waiting in line. No more awkward small talk with the cashier. No more unpacking and repacking your groceries.

if you need to get a lot of stuff you just grab a portable scanner at the entrance or use your phone. Scan and bag while you go through the store, then return the scanner and just scan your phone at the self-checkout terminal and pay. Zero friction.

I only found this to be a problem with the early ones. Aldi was the first shop I found to use pretty decent ones, and they also took a long time to switch, IIRC initially they didn’t like the quality of the self checkouts available. Of course all the other shops in my area were using near decade old self checkouts by that point.

One tip I can offer is to bag the last scanned item as fast as you can and then do NOT touch it again until the transaction is complete. The machines really don’t like if the weight of the scanned items changes by a single gram. Do not even look at the bagged items the wrong way or you’re going to wait.

They all have scales, but the scale can be turned off. When I worked retail I’d always disable them.

I’m pretty sure they don’t. No grocery store in my country has ever used self checkout with scales and these things seem custom build for the specific store chain. Why would they include scales which adds costs when they aren’t needed.

They have AI systems now trying to detect if you’re stealing stuff by scanning one item while putting multiple items in your bag. All it really does is make it so you can’t hold multiple items in one hand while scanning and packing them one at a time with the other. The number of false positives make it so the one sorry employee running the stall is never actually going to stop actual theft.

For me, it’s the card readers freezing when i try to do split payments. They use the worst card readers available on the market

1 of the 2 is an overworked regular, the other a student that started last week.

Also, I avoid self checkout, it takes away jobs.

Taking away jobs SHOULD be a good thing. Why the fuck do we want people to do shit work like that if it isn’t necessary?

We really need to be pushing more for a ~30 hour work week.

Yes, and that is why I mentioned pushing to fewer working hours to create more jobs from the reduced amount of remaining work that requires human labour

Had to explain to my daughter why there are so many empty checkout lanes, and it struck me that I’m gonna have to explain a lot of ruins of a civilization that used to be a bit more human.

I wish scan and go would be more common.

    1. Bring your own bags.
    2. Scan and bag items as you go.
    3. Check in at register and walk out. I’ve got two little kids and it’s the best way. It’s a shame that only Walmart offers scan and go in my area and it’s behind a subscription.

They used to have this for a year or two at our Kroger and it was amazing. Then they got rid of it… I think the excuse was too many people were “forgetting” to scan things, but my guess is the upkeep on the scanners was creating a teeny tiny dent in their profit margins (and they never actually got rid of other checkout modes to offset).

BJ’s does that and it’s very fast. They have a guy at the exit do a spot check, but there’s basically no line.

BJ’s does have an annual subscription though, which sucks.

      That sounds super convenient.

The concept of a Walmart subscription is hilarious to me, as well.

And then there are the store who are entirely self checkout aside from one person to enter codes or some shit. Gee thanks, I can drive to the store, find my own stuff, cart it around, check myself out bag my stuff and you get to maximize profit?

I feel so fortunate to be able to shop at HEB. They always have a ton of registers open and quickly flex as volumes change. I feel this meme on the rare occasion I go to Target though

Last time I went to target if like like a Kmart just before the company gave up. My bank even flagged the purchase as fraud because they couldn’t believe I was in there.

That’s funny, the one time my credit card info was stolen, what triggered the card freeze was a purchase made at Target just outside the city.

Yesterday. Supermakrket was packed of people and 2/12 cashregister were only available. Line was moving slowly. Self check out was also full. Me. Holding my best to not release of what ever my stomach created from of that burrito I ate from a parking lot.

Yet the self checkout is only ever 1/4 of the capacity of the POS and is 100% full. Should be the other way around.
